Hampshire-based charity, Brendoncare Clubs, is looking for volunteer choir leads to help them make a difference in the lives of older people by encouraging more singing in the community.
There are two Brendoncare Voices Clubs, Gosport and Southampton, which are currently running virtually. They meet weekly and provide an opportunity for friendship through informal singing groups. Leaders are needed to help members learn new songs, practice existing songs and most importantly, have fun! When the clubs are able to reopen it is hoped that the new volunteers will continue to lead the regular Gosport Voices choir group or deliver one-off sessions at other Brendoncare Clubs.
Elaine Chapman, a Brendoncare volunteer, commented, “Joining Brendoncare on retirement was the best thing I ever did and becoming a volunteer has enhanced that. Our choir is so joyful, it lifts everyone’s spirits, you only have to look at people’s faces to see the happiness it brings. I’m glad that I can be just a small cog in the huge wheel of Brendoncare that cares enough to bring people together, not only in clubs but virtually so that we can continue to meet up with our Brendoncare family to chat and sing our favourite songs together.
”Brendoncare has a very good, personal way of supporting volunteers. I would definitely recommend volunteering to anyone who enjoys talking to others and who has a bit of time to spare. You get so much satisfaction from helping people.”
Avril, a Brendoncare Voices Club member, said, “Singing, I have found so valuable in lifting my mood and getting that sense of community spirit with other people and that always leaves me feeling on a high. I just love it, love it, love it.”
Natalie Russell, Brendoncare Club Support, added, “Leading the Brendoncare’s Southampton Voices choir is the highlight of my week. We always have a laugh and chat together between songs. They are such a lovely, enthusiastic group who experiment with a variety of genres. We enjoy themed sessions such as Motown, ABBA, and musical theatre.”
Brendoncare Clubs is a well-established and trusted community service, offering a vital lifeline in Hampshire and Dorset, through the 94 clubs across 40 locations during the week and over the weekend. The Clubs have been temporarily closed since March 2020 and with many members living alone, Brendoncare has been helping to maintain the positive connections and friendships they enjoy through their regular clubs. The virtual choir sessions are another way of members being involved and connected with others.
