Support for BME Organisations – Important Update

In October we announced that our friends over at Southampton Voluntary Services have been awarded a grant to work with a number of community organisations, including Unity, to build support capacity for BME organisations  across Hampshire (see unityonline.org.uk/news/support-for-bme-led-charities-and-community-organisations/).
We are now pleased to be able to give more detail about the 3 programmes that will be running until 32 March 2021.
Certificate in Charity Management – A fully funded on-line training programme with certification open BME individuals or trustees of BME organisations. This course is sourced from an external provider and will be coupled with a peer learning group and SVS support locally. Approximately 50 hours learning through 9 modules running Jan to March covering –

  • Exploring the role of a leader
  • Your fundraising strategy
  • Boosting your digital marketing strategy
  • Financial management essential for charity leaders
  • Data protection and GDPR
  • Safeguarding Adults and children in charities
  • Supporting staff mental health
  • Employment law essentials
  • Staff recruitment, retention and employee engagement

The peer support sessions have initially been scheduled to be held by Zoom on alternate Tues evenings 18.00 – 19.30 starting from Tues 12th Jan 2021 or may be changed to a mutually agreed alternative time if the participant group prefer.
This course normally costs £350 per person but is being  provided free of charge. However in order to ensure that participants are serious about their commitment to complete the course we are requesting an £50 deposit which will be returned once the course is completed. The deposit may be exempted if there is genuine hardship and will be fully refundable on completion of the course but forfeited otherwise unless there are strong attenuating circumstances .   Please do contact  me if the deposit is likely to be a barrier to anyone’s participation.

Trustee Roles and Governance in BME led organisations. Locally provided 6 Zoom online short course units covering a basic introduction to key areas of the management of Voluntary groups and charities covering aspects of Trustee responsibilities and effective charity management .
These sessions are open to anyone from a BME community who is a trustee or committee member of a voluntary group or charity , is interested in becoming one or anyone who is a trustee or committee member of a BME organisation .
Sessions will be delivered by a variety of trainers from SVS and other Councils of Voluntary Service colleagues. Each course will cover the following modules although the order may vary for each course –

  • Roles and responsibilities of charity trustees and committee members
  • Basic financial management for trustees
  • Data Protection and Digital awareness for trustee
  • Basic safeguarding awareness
  • Staff or Volunteer management
  • Problem solving / addressing your key issues

The 3 courses will run by Zoom on the following dates –
Course A – Mondays 12.00 noon -14.00 on 1st Feb, 8th Feb,( NOT 15th Feb half term)  22nd Feb, 1st March, 8th March and 15th March

Equality and Diversity Awareness for All for both BME and non BME community groups and individuals. These 2 locally provided Zoom online short courses with 6 units will be delivered by Hon Alderman Dr Parvin Damani MBE an experienced Equality and Diversity trainer , retired multicultural health advisor and public health specialist.
Aspects of Equality and Diversity to be covered include understanding oppression, terminology, religion vs culture, migration impact and transition, importance of naming systems, communication and language , addressing own issues.
They will run on Tuesdays 11am- 1.30pm by Zoom on the following dates –
Course 1Tues 11.00 – 13.30 on 12th Jan, 19th Jan, 26th Jan , 2nd Feb, 9th Feb, 16th Feb 2021
