The Montessori Method was pioneered by Italian doctor Maria Montessori at the end of the nineteenth century. It has, as its central idea, freedom for the child within a carefully-structured environment. It is based on mutual respect and co-operation. The teacher in a Montessori classroom is more of a guide than an instructor, someone who recognises that all children are intrinsically motivated to learn, and that they absorb knowledge without effort when provided with the right kind of activities at the right stage of development. When your child first joins the privately owned nursery, they will begin with the simplest exercises, based on activities they all enjoy, and then, as their concentration grows and co-ordination and working habits develop, they are encouraged to move forward to more advanced exercises.
