Andover based community garden group Rooting for Andover has won the top accolade in the RHS’s South East in Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards by achieving an ‘Outstanding – Level 5’ score for the Poppy Community Garden in Augusta Park. The garden scored highly in all categories, including community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement. RHS judge, John Tweddle visited the garden back in July and within his report commented how the garden was making a difference to local people and was employing good gardening practice with their plant choices which enhanced the area.
Within their feedback, the RHS also stated that: “Following last year’s achievements, the group have expanded the growing area considerably, the fruit tree orchard has established successfully with the introduction of wild flowers across the orchard. The pond has matured well with several inhabitants namely frogs etc. The raised growing beds are in full production and repainted in vibrant colours as you enter the garden. Produce has been made available for all with a free distribution point at the entrance; further quiet areas have been created so visitors can use the garden as a place to enhance their mental health.”
Rooting for Andover Secretary Vicki Cunningham commented that: “She was so proud of all the trustees and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, which has led to this award. Considering the community garden is only in its second year, it is an amazing achievement.”
Rooting for Andover Chairman Michael Parker added: “I am delighted for all the volunteers who have worked so hard this year creating a beautiful garden. Soon we will start planning and going for gold again in next year’s competition. “
Rooting for Andover is a chartable incorporated organisation that is solely funded by grants and donations. All trustees and volunteers give their time for free. Rooting for Andover was also voted Most Inspiring Community Garden Organisation in Hampshire by Acquisition Internal Magazine earlier this year in their Non-Profit Organisation Awards.
